Hi Walter,

I'd also suggest the heavier meals get eaten sooner in the trip to reduce weight faster. Leave the oatmeal/mac n cheese to the last days.

4 1/2 pounds sounds fine for four days. I expect we'd go with the freeze-dried chicken to reduce the amount of trash we carry.

The boys are big on treats.

I will have them assemble and sample a couple of freezer bag meals tonight. We can get the Fantastic Foods black beans at our local grocery, so black beans and rice is one of them. I like to add some sun-dried tomatoes to that and/or some smoked paprika. The other is the savory couscous from your book. Try adding some diced dried apricots along with the other fruit. It is a good dish as written, but the apricots make it great. If you can, get dried Blenheim apricots. They are about 5X better than the cheap, moist Turkish apricots. We get ours from C. J. Olsen (http://www.cjolsoncherries.com/).

It could have been a little lighter had I used freeze-dried chicken, but overall the weight is about 4 1/2 lbs for 4 days. I am fine with that! I figure in most cases 1 1/2 to 2 lbs a day if I have heavier treats :)

Thanks! I'm working with a group of older Boy Scouts planning a week-long Sierra backpack, and I will forward this to them.

How much does this weigh? With a longer trip, our guys are thinking about how much they will be carrying the first couple of days.

Hey, Sarah, thanks for this post. This is the kind of thing that's really helpful to me. Trip menu planning causes my brain to go into overload because I like good food on the trail but I also like simplicity!
