Food Find: Paleo Meals To Go Beef Mt Stew

The past year or so I have had many an email over Paleo-diet friendly meals. While one can throw one together – and it can be great for those eating gluten-free as well, it’d be nice to have ready-to-go meals.

Enter Paleo Meals To Go from Colorado:

Having a chance to try out their Beef Mountain Stew, I jumped at it. It is a rare day when I get excited and scream “You HAVE to try this freeze-dried meal”. This is one of those rare times.

This isn’t the dreaded freeze-dried “stew” that causes one’s throat to clench up, of yonder days back when one saw a shiny package hanging in the local outdoors store. Unlike a certain famous brand whose ingredient list contains:

Potatoes, Cooked Beef (beef, salt), Carrots, Green Peas (peas, salt), Corn Oil, and Contains 2% or less of: Modified Corn Starch, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (corn, yeast, wheat gluten, soy protein), Dehydrated Onions, Sugar, Spices, Spice Extract, Soybean Oil, Garlic Powder.

Paleo To Go’s contains:

Beef, carrots, onions, green onions, celery, garlic, asparagus, mushrooms, garlic, thyme, marjoram, and black pepper.

The $12.99 price tag for one meal, serving one person, might seem steep, compared to $7.39 for its equivalent non-paleo beef stew. Until you realize just what that extra $4 and a half dollars buys you. No thickeners. No grains. Nothing “modified”. Just a LOT of tasty small bites of beef and vegetables. Unlike the competition, this stew only needs 1ΒΌ cups water and 6 or so minutes of sit time. It isn’t a scary bowl of glop, but something you WANT to eat. No crunchy “beef” bits that are oddly powdery. No chemical aftertaste. And salty? No. In fact you control that:

Meals with the major salt separate? Oh yes. Thank you. I really, really mean that.

Not only is this meal paleo and gluten-free, it is safe for my youngest son to eat. It will be a fantastic addition for his meals.

Not paleo but love a good meal? Serve the meat and vegetables over a bed of rice, tossed with pasta or even better…served on flour tortillas with cheese as wraps. These options would allow it to serve 2 people.

I look forward to sampling more of their meals as they come out.
