Simplicity can be a good thing. So can just trying to not be a snob, especially over coffee. At home I am a barista for Kirk (I spent 9 years being a barista – and even published a short book last year on it The Natural Barista: Latte Syrups & Drinks) and love making gourmet espresso drinks. But…when I travel? Or hike? Nope. I am L-A-Z-Y.

Bring water to a boil in pot – or if you are really cool, a backpacker’s tea kettle:


Take a favorite instant coffee, such as Jiva Cubes, and a packet of hot cocoa:


Add 6 to 8 ounces hot water and stir well:


It’s sugary. It has caffeine. It gets you going. Not much more is needed 😉

You can always get a fancy latte back in town, after all!
