Utah Junipers

Utah Junipers

When I took these photos on a trip to Arches National Park, at the time I didn’t know what the tree was. Just that it really called to me. I was taken by them at the first one I saw. I felt like I was seeing a forest of gnarled evil, which I wanted to photograph all day long!

The twisted tree is called Juniperus osteosperma.

Like alpine trees, these trees grow very slowly, but can live 350 to 700 years! Some even live as long as a 1,000 years. Amazing really!

Check out more on the Utah Juniper on the Canyonlands NP website. Any tree that grow to rarely above 15 feet high, yet has a 25 foot root system is something everyone should learn about!

Bust most of all, dream of going to Arches and Canyonlands NP’s and seeing them in person. You won’t regret that!

  1. Gnarled evil?!? LOL! Those look amazing. That’s one area I would love to get to.

  2. Hehheh! All I could think of was like Snow White the movie, with the trees grabbing at her ;-)
