Gear Review: SunBell

A few months back we were sent a Bright Products SunBell to review. Solar and LED’s have made what once unreachable, now something many of us can have along. The SunBell is interesting. It isn’t the lightest at 1 pound, 3 ounces, nor is it the smallest device. It does though work well, charge easily and can be used many ways – all while powering up your smartphone or tablet. For the long-haul, this can be a fun and very useful tool. And there is no, yes, ZERO, hand cranking needed to get power. That in itself is awesome. Many lanterns that are long-haul have a hand crank.

How the full SunBell looks, set up:

The main part of the light is the neck, which is flexible. It contains the battery, the ports for charging the light, as well as the charging port for your phone (it comes with a small cord that plugs in and acts as a USB charger – you will still need a standard mini USB to USB cord as well). The neck is stiff, heavy-duty and can be bent to fit around your neck (no headlamp needed!) or over a branch, or well, anyway you dream up! The bell part softens the light, leaving you with a most excellent ceiling light. You can also use it to boost your music if like, by popping the bell off and resting your phone in it. For base camping, car camping and cabin stays, this lamp is a dream!

The base interior holds a long cord (9 feet), that wraps around tightly inside. This allows you to put the base outside, on your pack or tent, and charge.

The other side of the base is the solar panel:
