Memorial Day Weekend is coming up this week – and that means it is the “official” start to backpacking season, no? But you say….I’m too busy to go pack food. I hear I can go to Costco and buy a bin of freeze-dried meals. Or…I’ll survive on ramen. Or a stack of flour tortillas and a tub of PB.
Yeah, we get it: You are that kind of hiker. I was once part of your clan 😉 I’d throw random food in my Ursack and hit the road, and then wonder what I was thinking when I opened it up, starving.
You want meals with minimal thought, cooking and as little cleaning as can be. You are happy to have a tortilla hanging out of your maw while you hike. You have miles to get under your feet, and no time to be fussy.
Speaking of flour tortillas, this breakfast is FAST and you can even pre-make it at home for the next day, and tuck it in a bag.
Pair it with a cold drink, high in protein, you are out of the tent quickly. No stove, no water to boil.
Pack in snack items you can grab quickly. Tip? Have a dedicated small silnylon ditty sack and only buy single serving sizes of dried fruit, nuts, seeds, jerky, crackers, chips – Minimus is your friend. I often would eat like that throughout the day and not stop for lunch, but sometimes you come to a pretty place – or it is simply too warm, and a siesta is warranted. The no-cook lunch is your friend….
Repeat snacks as needed, till you find a place to call camp for night. Pull out your stove and boil some water for an easy dinner. FBC is your friend and ticket to eating quickly –
And don’t forget a hiker trash worthy dessert 😉
Have an awesome weekend – be safe and eat well!
