If you don’t know the history of the FBC Cozy, in 2006 I started developing a fabric cozy that was lightweight, compactable, non-bulky and could be washed. By the end of 2006 I finally had a prototype I was mostly happy with. It was 3 layers of fabric and a lot bigger than they are now but it worked and I had figured out the 3D part in my mind for sewing them.

I still crank them out though – In 2007 when I took them live I had no idea if I would even sell 1 one of them. But sell they did. The first venue I took them to was the PCTA Trails event in Seattle in March of 2007. It was first “trails fest”, of which many more came after:

We sold a few that day and then they went live on the website and the orders started coming in. At this point I have shipped cozies all the way around the globe to nearly every country that has mail service and to every state in the US.

First up is an oldie recipe that I created a couple years ago – and it has been featured before on Tater Tuesday but isn’t a well known recipe on our website. Cabbage isn’t a vegetable people think about when they start packing up trail meals….

Colcannon Mashers:

So what is Colcannon? Like many ethnic recipes it is loosely based and varies by the cook but is based on potatoes. I have long loved it with cabbage and carrots added and a little bacon added in is never a bad thing….

Then just for you all I created a new recipe:

It took me this many years to find a worthy project for Vienna Sausages and I finally did:

Scary is all the kids in this photo are teens or adults now. They grow up too fast!

We had been on a cold hike that day and stopped for lunch. I pulled out a recipe I had made up. It was for Cranberry Chicken Rice. The recipe worked, it was easy. I was hooked. Talking with my friend Tori we knew we were onto something – easy recipes with little cleanup. And from that moment along that river I knew where I was going. And thanks to everyone who has supported us along the way it has been a great 6 years of hiking, backpacking, presentations, meeting new crazies to bring into the “family” and most of all? All them recipes! All that food! FBC was born that day and a year later the first edition of Freezer Bag Cooking came out:

To Jer, you are so missed by all of us. Hobo Ridgrests and all – I loved hiking with you. If I am grateful it was that we got to know you for those years. You always made everyone laugh on trips.

We have brought the Classic FBC Cozy back in Blue Flame, Orange Flame and Blue Water. A new whimsical Green Nature joins them. Also we added the Green Nature to the Minimalist Cozies. The colors have also been added to the FBC Starter Kits. We hope to get a camo back in stock soon and also should be bringing back the every popular Tye Dye (which we carry both Desert Camo and the Tye Dye in the Minimalist version).

So thank you all for being patient with us – I sew around Walker’s naps and play time. Our little man will be 8 months this week – with two little toothies now and the desire to go every where his little arms and legs will take him (yes, we have crawling 101 going on!)

Having said that I am almost to the point where I can start back into production on our FBC Cozies. Walker and I went fabric procuring recently – and yes guys, I listened to all your emails: the manly colors are coming back! Currently we have plenty of the Minimalist Cozy in stock, of which DO fit quart size freezer bags. The Classic Quart Cozy has been the one we have nearly run out of, down to 3 less-than-manly choices. So yeah, Flames are coming back!

Not sure what the timeline looks like but hopefully within 2-4 weeks we will have them in stock once again, in time for Holiday gifts and hiking planning for next spring.
